If you’re one of the many disgruntled PC consumers who have found Windows 8 to be less than ideal, despair not! Last week Microsoft released Windows 8.1, and guess what? The beloved Start button that Windows had catastrophically removed – it’s back!
Well, sort of. It’s not exactly the same ol’ Start button that the tens of millions of Microsoft users have grown to love (and/or desperately need) since 1995, but it is, according to Wired magazine’s Mat Honan, a “vaguely Start-button like thing” which brings you to a more expansive Start menu. This is high praise from someone like Honan, who had previously characterized Windows 8 as “an uncomfortable mix of playfulness and stodginess, the mullet of computer operating systems.”
Windows 8.1 has a few other well-received updates in addition to the revamped Start button, including more options for user customization, a greater focus on the Search feature, and smoother integration with the cloud. Perhaps the best feature of all is that the update is free for those who already own a machine with Windows 8.
